Planning a Digital-Transformation Project

Planning a Digital-Transformation Project is a program that provides 48 hours of training over 5 months. Participants will learn how to:  

  1. Define a digital-transformation project with specific objectives, as well as a strategic vision that aligns mission, needs and capacities. 

  2. Identify the key steps in planning a digital-transformation project and understand the importance of the stakeholders for adopting the solutions. 

  3. Explain the impacts of a responsible digital transformation project on the organization’s stakeholders, so as to ensure an ethical, inclusive approach throughout the process. 

This program consists of six online training modules and is designed to strengthen digital competencies and improve technological capacities. A total of 18 to 37 organizations will participate each time the program is offered. Organizations are encouraged to register two people at a time, so as to encourage knowledge transfer and increase impact within the organization.

In addition, DATAide provides customized support to all participating organizations throughout their implementation of their digital-transformation projects.

Who is this training for?

Managers and staff in charge of digital-transformation projects in non-profit organizations fighting poverty and social exclusion in Quebec.

It's for you if:

  • Your organization is in the process of exploring socially useful digital solutions to serve your mission;

  • Your organization has limited experience in implementing digital solutions;

  • You have sufficient time to follow the courses, including practical exercises. Please note that a large proportion of the hours can be scheduled during your preferred time slot;

  • Your organization's management supports this approach and agrees to do the administrative work required for CSMO-ESAC to reimburse the salaries of those who attend. A meeting will be held to confirm this commitment before the second component of the program starts.

  • Organization’s availability;

  • A formal commitment from your management.

Prerequisites

  • Have attended the DATAide Introduction to Digital Transformation orientation webinar; 

  • Have a stable, high-speed Internet connection. 

Upcoming dates

Planned over three years, the cohorts for Component 2 will meet in Fall/Winter 2025, Spring/Summer 2026, Winter/Fall 2026, Spring/Summer 2027, and Fall/Winter 2027.

Training plan 

Module 1

Digital technology to support the mission of organizations

  • By studying what digital transformation enables and implies, the participant will be able to identify, organize and collect the information needed to define the needs of his or her organization, with a view to identifying the appropriate digital solutions to serve his or her mission at a later stage.

  • - Understand the main components of a digital transformation; 

    - Understand what digital solutions can enable, depending on needs (advantages and disadvantages specific to any digital solution); 

    - Understand that digital solutions offer multiple and varied functionalities. 

  • - Be able to initiate reflection on irritants and organizational needs; 

    - Be able to obtain relevant information to better understand organizational needs and improve decision-making.

Module 4

Communication tools within a digital transformation project

  • In this module, you'll learn the importance of communicating well about your digital transformation project. When introducing new digital tools or working with data, it's essential to communicate the intention behind the change proposal and the actions that will be required for a successful digital transformation project. Communication will be approached from the angle of people, data and digital tools.

  • - Understand the essential elements of communication in a digital transformation project; 

    - Understand the challenges of human-centred and data-driven communication.

  • - Ability to communicate the vision of the transformation project; 

    - Ability to communicate the value of learning by doing; 

    - Ability to develop organized data communication.

Module 2

Assessing your ability to carry out a digital transformation project

  • The aim of this module is to assess your organization's ability to successfully carry out a digital transformation project by identifying its strengths and weaknesses, as well as opportunities and threats. Assessing your organization's capacity is an essential second step in identifying the digital solution that can meet your needs.

  • - Understand the importance of assessing an organization's capability for a successful digital transformation project; 

    - Understand the essential elements that make up the notion of capability; 

    - Understand the factors that influence your organization's capability; 

    - Understand the essential criteria for formulating precise and realistic objectives.

  • - Be able to carry out an organizational diagnosis.

Module 5

Information security

  • The use of digital tools as part of a community organization's activities necessarily raises information security issues. Adopting good information security practices not only enables an organization to adequately protect the confidential and personal information it manages on a daily basis, but also to be more resilient in the face of incidents that occur more and more frequently in the digital environment. This module aims to help learners identify the risks inherent to their context, as well as the right reflexes and practices to mitigate them effectively.

  • - Understand the most recurrent risks linked to digital technology in general, and more specifically to data; 

    - Understand basic best practices for risk prevention; 

    - Understand the key components of a risk management strategy. 

  • - Identify, analyze and contextualize the risks associated with the use of data and digital technologies; 

    - Identify basic best practices for mitigating recurring information security risks. 

Module 3

Inclusive, accessible digital tools

  • This module is an introduction to the major issues of digital inequality. Understanding the risks of exclusion associated with digital technology will enable you to better anticipate them. You will learn how to implement best practices by examining each stage of a digital transformation project.

  • - Understand the challenges of digital inequalities and their links with social inequalities. 

    - Discover and deepen the uses and best practices for making a digital transformation project more inclusive.

  • - Be able to reflect on the risks of exclusion and inclusive practices; 

    - Know how to analyze the accessibility constraints of digital tools in order to assess their relevance and the risks of exclusion presented by their use.

Module 6

Change management: planning, monitoring and evaluating a digital transformation project

  • This sixth module provides a summary of the key steps in designing an inclusive and accountable digital transformation plan. It introduces the action plan as a relevant tool for gaining insight into both the direction of the project and the actions to achieve it. To complete the design of the action plan, the module integrates the notions of monitoring, evaluation and learning culture.

  • - Understand the planning phases of a digital transformation project; 

    - Understand the importance of data-driven monitoring and evaluation strategies to maintain informed decision-making; 

    - Understand the importance of a learning culture when implementing a digital transformation project.

  • - Identify the basic best practices for planning a digital transformation project.

Your commitment

The DATAide program was created to support community agencies in their digital transition. All training is offered free of charge to participating agencies. In exchange, agencies must commit to participating in the training modules they have registered for.

What does this training cost?

This training is valued at CA$5000 but is offered for free to anyone who works for a Quebec non-profit organization that fights poverty and social exclusion. Participants’ salaries may also be reimbursed under certain conditions.
